Reading Tenure Bands Across Scattered Teams
How HR teams compare tenure when staff sit across offices, home desks, and partner sites without misleading averages.
When people work from different cities, a single average tenure hides as much as it reveals. A Bangkok hub with long-serving coordinators can mask short stays among remote specialists hired for project bursts.
Start by banding tenure into short, mid, and long ranges that match how your managers actually talk about teams. Then split those bands by location type: primary office, secondary site, and fully remote. The resulting table is usually more useful than a company-wide mean.
Watch for thin cells. A band with fewer than five people should be described in prose rather than charted as a percentage. That habit keeps conversations honest and protects individuals.
Bring the bands into stay conversations. Managers respond better to “three of five specialists in this remote cohort are under nine months” than to a polished corporate score.
